Default solenoid replacement

Anyone ever replace the solenoid in the front wheel that operates the four wheel drive clutch? This is the round magnet that freezes the armature plate. Whats involved? Whats the goo that holds the wires tight to the shock tower? I can't get the drive to engage on the left ssisde of the quad, it's an 03 Sportsman 500. Theres magnetic draw to the armature plates when the unit is off and the key is on with 4wd engaged at the switch, as soon as I reassmeble, no 4wd. A very frustrating sirtuation. I havnt taken the measurements on the two rings in the solenoid to see if theyre at the proper depth or offset. If I sound confused, good. I am. If anyone hass had this problem please write back, I could use some seasoned guidance. Thanks
