you need to remove the belt drive outer cover, then the clutches, then the inner cover to make access to 2 bolts and bracket, or you can remove the same the hard way by wrenching off one flat at a time. the other side requires removing the pull start mechanism and you will have access to those 2 bolts. Good luck. Frankie Z

Thanks you would think they would have thought of a better design than that!

You would of thought so but I guess the design is what keeps their techs in business for the less than mechanically inclined. Let me know if you need advice on pulling the clutches. Frankis Z

Have an '01 TB that needs the starter replaced. Just how do you get the front clutch off the shaft. I'm trying to avoid buying a tool that I will probably only need once.

Just so you all know one of the biggest reasons for replacing starters is because you have to drain the water out of them every so often. There is a drain in the bottom of the starter. If you dont drain it after you are in water the starter will eventually rust and will fail.

buy yourself 3/4 fine thread stock about a foot long with 2 nuts to fit the threaded rod. remove the bolt in the center of the primary and thread this stock into the center until bottom out. use the 2 nut back to back and crank on the nuts until the primary comes loose. it most likely will require some torque. once it brakes loose then you are good to go. Make sure to wedge a piece of wood or something into the primary and the footboard to keep the clutch from turning. Good Luck

How maybe sprayin something like electrical contact cleaner in there once in awhile. (?) Seems like breaking up some accumulated sludge and dirt would be the thing to do.
