02' Scrambler 500 gearcase slipping ?
#1
I would like someone to take a guess what is wrong here. On this atv , it will work fine if you run in reverse. But, if you put it into fwd and goose it , doesn't even have to be hard at all . The gearcase sounds like it is slipping . I know what external sprockets and chains sound like when they are worn and slip over teeth and this is not the case. Has anyone ever had this happen ? It is something in the gearbox itself and will slip until the cows come home if you stay on the throttle. You can put with this but give it more gas than a 1/4 throttle and it slips.
Any ideas ? It only seem to want to do it in fwd gear.
Thanks,
D.

The silent chain inside the gearcase is bad and possibly the gears that it runs on.

are you sure that its completely engaged in fwd gear?? it will also make that sound if its not completely in gear.
but most likely its one of the 2 internal chains..... theres a standard chain for forward gear and the silent chain for the reverse.

Took the gearcase apart and this one only has one chain inside. Do these chains stretch ? As I see there is no adjustment on it . This gearcase has been apart before as the snapring thst hold the thinner gear on the shaft is tack welded . Is this the reverse gear, and also, is this a trick ? That is to tack weld the snapring closed to keep it from coming off ?

oh im sorry, i assumed you had a 4x4 transmission.
i think i heard something about doing that with the snap ring. there has been issues with snap rings coming loose.
but yes, the chains do stretch. if you have a service manual, it should be stated in there, about the stretch limit for the chain.

I replace the chain any time I have a tranny apart.THey do stretch. On the welded snap ring that isnt a bad idea.I just add a washer to take up the space between the snapring and the gear to keep the gear from hitting the snapring. But the weld will work.

Is the thinner gear the fwd or reverse gear in there transmissions ?
My gears don't looks bad , is it usually just the chain that stretches ? Oh also, the bushing on the inside of the thin gear looks worn, is this normal ?
Thanks so Much,
D.

Not being critical here.......but are you sure that is it in the gear case? Its not your drive chain skipping teeth is it? Might want to check and see what condition your chain and sprockets are in......
