Reverse shuts off engine...???? Help!!
#11
I have been working on Polaris ATV's since 1990. I have seen this happen MANY TIMES.
It is the reverse overide black box that causes the problem.
As I said before. Unhook it or replace it. The choice is yours.
You can mess around with switches and such untill the cows come home and it is not going to do any good.
This is my last attempt to help.
Do as you please.

Just unplug the black wire out of the box and you will be ok.

Sounds like cornbeard is an EXPERT mechanic. I suggest you do as he insists or he may never speak to you again, big deal.
My o4 sportsman acts like a rev limiter if you don't hold down the button in reverse. On an older machine like yours that i have had in the past if you put it into reverse it is design to kill the motor if you do not depress the button. If that is your case i don't think it's "the black box"
But i'm no EXPERT cornbeard is so maybe ask him to start buying your spare parts. Let us know how you make out with this one.

To my knowledge Polaris has NEVER built a machine that was designed to shut off if you put it in reverse without pushing the overide button.
I personaly know for a fact at from at least 1990 on they have never designed an ATV that works like that.

To whom it may consern. The origional poster asked a simple question. I answered his question with the correct info.
What he intends to do with the info is his business. He can ignore the correct info and proceed to follow the advice of someone who knows nothing about the subject if that is what he wants to do.
Or he can spend about ten minutes unhooking or replacing the black box and continue riding.

Cornbread is correct, Polaris never made a unit that would die in reverse. The override button is to bypass the rev limiter, it should not die in reverse but just cut out. While it could be a shorted wire over 90% of the time it is the black box. While in side you should check wires anyway, if you find bad wire ok. TORK

Cornbread, when you unhook the black box, does it let it rev while in reverse? Does this disable the function of the button to not allow you to cycle through the rpms, trip, etc. on the headlight pod? I have an '05 700 efi and was just wondering if this could be a way to bypass reverse override button option?
Thanks,
Thanks,
