I read your post, and am really not ADD despite what it may seem....it's just that the whole box is $230.00, and I want to make sure.

Corncob,
Try looking up the specs or call the dealer on a 1994 sportsman 400, 2 stroke. Ask about how the override works on the machine.
I'm sure you have worked on every Polaris ever made but you are giving this kid back yard mechanic advice.

I KNOW they are not supposed to die if you put them in reverse without pushing the overide.
IF you had one that did then then YOU had a problem with YOUR ATV.

holy smoke, what did you ever do this person to cause such treatment? i would agree that it sounds odd that if you put a bike(any bike by anyone) that it would be made to kill the engine. unless were talking about a lawn mower(riding) when the blades are engauged and then put it in reverse it will kill the engine for safety. but i myself am far from being an expert lol.

to all concerned I have a 325 trailboss year 2000 ,
the machine is supposed to have a reverse limiter on it when put in reverse ,UNLESS THE BUTTON is pushed ,then the reverse limiter is by passed ..
The machine is not supposed to DIE when put in reverse ,CORNBREAD2 is correct ,
My machine never has died when put in reverse ,and I don't have to push in a button!!!!!!

Added note, my 02 Boss was having problems with the overide button not working, and later, needed held when in forward. I'll go with Cornbread2, get a new box, or pull the wire.

corn bread is right, i have a 1997 magnum 425 and when the override was hooked up, it would just sputter in reverse, there never was a polaris atv made with the override meant to shut off motor

deerkiller its not agaist the law to be wrong just say your wrong dont cause a problem over how right and how wrong.if you shift to reverse the motor should stay on intill the killswitch is hit simple as that
