if its 18 lbs heavy of roating mass, it might be take a little more throttle to get it going and you want low range in the mud. just my own opinion on it.

Ste -

Do you still think 27" would be too
much for our 450's? I am willing to
loose a little speed if it means I can
go thru a ton more MUD without getting
stuck and gain with clearence. I'm not a
speed junkie anyway, and how fast can you
really go in tight trails anyways? Fastest so
far is near 50 MPH on my in-laws property
11 acres of open field. So as I finally get it
up that far time to slow down due to land
ending to cross road.

However if it is a situation whereby it puts too
much stress on all my parts (trans/clutch/axle)
etc. then I wouldn't want to risk that either.

26" seems the safest with me but just want an extra
edge in the MUD/Trail with tire size and ground clearence.

can someone tell me the mechanics of it?how does it put stress on the axles? larger tires dont change the angle of the alxes - it raises the whole quad, right? is the extra mass of the tires that the axles are trying to turn?

Brutus450 -

I am NOT exactly sure if it even would?
But just trying to do the engineering
research first. I hope it doesn't so I can
pursue that, again with me no real biggie
if I loose a little speed/power if it can put
me thru alot more (aka 27" vs 26").

But these guys know best owning prior Quads
and running bigger tires etc. Stendori is our
Mentor, kudos to him and thanks for putting
up with all of our newbie/Indecisiveness/
pestering questions...8)..lol

IMO the only thing that would really get stressed more is the belt and maybe the steering. My Scrambler was left with the stock sized tires, but the SP got 27s right of the bat and when they wear out they will be getting 28s. I don't think that with the stock clutching in these bikes it would be enough to snap axles. Maybe a 800 with a lift and aggresive clutching would you really have problems. I hope I don't have any problems when my lift kit shows up. LOL Don't tell CAPER that I'm moddin' my bike. LOL He doesn't agree with it. And he doesn't go over the floorboards in mud and water, and when he does he forgets how to use the 4x4.

Sorry bud just had to throw that in there LOL

Brutus450, I think I can answer your question about how a larger tire puts more stress on a quad's engine and drivetrain. Picture yourself at the center of a circle (axle center). If you hold a stick 5 feet long and have to push against a force of say, 10 lbs. in a circular motion it is relatively easy. If you make that stick 25 feet long (exaggeration) it is much harder to push against it. It is the same for your drivetrain on your quad the larger the radius (the measurement from center to the outside of the tire) the more force is required to turn it or push against the ground to get the quad going or keep it going. I hope this helps. I hated physics but did learn a little something afterall, I guess.

Com'on Caper, didn't you know the
best Camouflage for your bike is
MUD? I mean even my boots can
take the MUD up to my ankles.

Live, ride and have FUN!

If you run into a problem, come back
and post the question to STENDORI, lol!
(Just messing w/ya man!)

Ste, you the MAN!

You're welcome. That being said, I'll probably go up a size or two when we wear out the 489s on our quads. I think the 500cc engines will handle it without too much of a problem.
