Alot has to do with the experience of the rider........How long has your son been riding? Next time switch machines and see what happens.........Another variable is tires......Some do better in mud some don't.........Sometimes riding deep mudholes takes a lot of shifting your weight and knowing your machine.....

By the way..Welcome to the boards here...Another thing to keep in mind is that larger tires will slow you down a little.......If you're looking for a better launch check out a Heelclicker clutch kit.....

for more power consider adding the dual header pipe from an 800 sportsman and a quality aftermarket muffler. I use a white bros/pure polaris. You will have to rejet the carb but when you are done... look out! also reclutch w/ 27"tires is a must.

polarismax700, with all due respect, could you unlock the caps please, tough to read for us old folk!
could you be more specific about "not getting through"? if you are traveling at less than 15 mph in rough terrain you should use low range especially with the larger tires. is that the case, did you run out of power in high range? traction should not be an issue with that rubber unless your AWD isn't working properly. make sure your AWD is functioning properly, all four wheels should spin at the same time, if one front spins but not the other then you have a problem. don't be afraid to get the rpms up in low range, better than smoking a belt in high without enough engine speed.
if you know a good welder, (exhaust shop), you can modify your stock exhaust yourself for a more aggressive exhaust note, beware, it will be about twice as loud. remove silencer by loosening two bolts and removing two springs, good luck, vise grips will do if you don't have a spring spreader. cut the end off cleanly and cut a nice uniform hole in the center to receive the outlet that you will remove from the bottom, you will need to fabricate a piece to cover the hole left behind. from the opposite end where the inlet is, (here's the hard part) remove the spark arrestor by drilling a ____load of holes in it and pulling out with long needle nose pliers. probably much easier to cut off this end too, just make sure to mark where it was for reattachment. when done gutting have it welded back together making sure everything lines up and point the outlet elbow down towards the ground. this mod will increase the amount of air that passes through the engine during combustion, it will lean out the air/fuel ratio so you may have to jet up to compensate. my machine was running rich anyway and I think it is safe, still have to check plugs to make sure, cooling fan cycles less frequently so it can't be too lean. I did not loose any low end as I feared, actually seems to have more grunt, could just be the additional noise. it's quicker to build revs but the top end seems the same. this isn't a difficult mod aside from the welding part, I have a guy that does all my exhaust on all my vehicles and I trust his work. most can't tell anything was done, visually anyway. this lets the machine breath a lot better, but also makes it a lot louder, you will definately be noticed. if you have sensitive neighbors and don't want to be a nuisance I would advise AGAINST this procedure, not to mention you will no longer be allowed into state parks without a spark arrestor, that's if you tell them. I use mine mostly for chores out here in the boonies, so there is noone to bother. of course you could always just buy a slip on for a better exhaust note:
