Noticed alot of problems with Scrambler 4x4's lately is this just a coincidence or is it pretty common. I had just convinced myself the machine I wanted was a 2000 400 4x4, now I am thinking the 01' 400 2x4 may be more dependable and less likely to throw me over the bars if the 4x4 decides to kick in at 50mph....

Thanks in advance for any replies...

Sold my Mojave just need to sell the 400ex and I may be a new Polaris owner...

I think the biggest problem with the Polaris 4x4 system is that people don't perform the maintenance when it's suppose to be done.

Most of the problems that have been posted here talking about the front hubs kicking in, were most likely cleared up with a change of the hub fluid.

I check my hub fluid regularly and I've never had a problem with the 4x4 engaging on its own.

Kind of new to Polaris so here goes a stupid question. Is the problem relating to hub fluid a matter of improper levels or from degradation of the fluid. Thanks for the input thus far !!

It is more a degradation of the fluid. Also, if you never check the hubs, there is no way to know if there is enough.

i agree with all these guys. if you maintain your machine properly, you should have no problems.

also, if it did kick into 4x4 at 50 m.p.h. you wouldn't get thrown over the bars. it would be just like flipping the switch at 50 m.p.h, which is completely acceptable, of coarse you should let off the gas. the 4 wheel would just kick in and give you extra traction.

and one more thing, you if you plan on doing any muddy, snowy, rocky, or steep trail riding, you will definitely be glad you got the 4x4. i have a '99 scrambler 4000, i love it, its the most versatile quad. great all around.

I am curious why you want to get rid of your 400ex for a Scrambler 4x4. I was leaning toward buying the 400ex myself for a while now I am seriously considering buying the SC500 4x4. Was the 400ex not versatile enough for you.

Thanks for your help.

Hey Jeff,

Sorry for the delay in this response been out of town for the holidays!

You hit the nail on the head!! The 400ex is a great bike for those people near dunes or who enjoy catching alot of air or enjoy racing ect.. I would have been better off with a more versatile machine for the type of riding I do and the terrain on which I ride. I should have done a little more research when buying the quad it is my mistake. Live and learn I guess!!!

I have 2 sets of riding pals. One set is for fast summer riding, going to MX tracks etc so they are 250R's, Banshee, LT250, 400EX etc. The other set of riders are the ones I can ride w/ the rest of the year during the mud of fall, snow of winter & spring thaw which is ice, mud & snow & these are obviously 4wds. My 2wd pals park their rides until summer. My point is, a modified 4x4 Scrambler is one of the most versatal ATV's ever, but as we know, does not excel at any one area but thats fine w/ me cause it jumps as high as I want to go, & goes thru as deep of mud as I want to take it.

Triston never mind the 4x4 scrambler go with the 400 2x4.

I bring my 2x4 on terrain that is meant for 4x's and it handles them well and after if I what to smoke a 400ex in a drag I can.

Lets put it this way the scrambler has the looks, speed, and power of a sport quad.

But also the torque, work capabilities, and pulling power of a utility machine.

How much more versitile can you get plus the fact my scrambler cost $800 less then an ex.

Triston I dont believe theres much more I can say then go to your dealer and buy one.
