Default oil change question 05 sportsman 800

I'm going a bit insane with my first oil change on an 05 sportsman 800 i just picked up used. When trying to remove the filter, it bumps up against the dipstick tube. I tried loosening it and moving it around, but it was still blocking the filter from comming off. after 2 hours of scratching my head, i removed the dipstick tube by removing the two 8mm bolts securing it. Was that nessesary?? Thanks. Ed

The filter should come right off without taking the dip stick tube out. You could possibly has a bent dip stick tube or maybe someone has installed the wrong filter. Whats the the brand and number on the old oil filter?

filter is a 2540086 polaris. The dipstick tube dosn't appear to have any damage either.

Well you have the right oil filter. You shouldn't need to remove the dip stick tube to remove the oil filter.

Just did my 1st oil change on mine. It was a close fit but came right off. Would be nice to have been able to get a good grip on it.

are you trying to pull the filter up through between the floor board and dip stick? not intended to do that..unscrew the filter reach under the front fender and take the filter out from the bottom.........

No, there is definatly something weird with mine. When i unscrew the filter, it backs and stops up against the filler tube. There was no way to unscew the filter without removing the filler tube. I wonder if it has the wrong filler tube installed.

the filter and oil dipstick is close. I cracked a dipstick tube by removing a tight oil filter. go to autozone or whatever and get the oil filter strap. It works perfectly.
