Just curious:

How does the field of Polaris atv's compare as far as top speed??

Honestly-what will yours do?

My Xpedition 425 tops out around 50mph, but it only has about 50 miles on it, so can I expect a little more as the motor breaks in? (I did not buy it for road racing, I am just curious)

What will a pipe gain? Taller tires?

[comments anyone]

I've never put my Blazer under a radar gun but I'm guessing it's about 45-50. I've heard claims a pipe can add 10 and a guy I'm buying and HPD pipe from swears it gave him almost 12. But I find that a little hard to swallow.

Yes - that would be it. We'll see what happens. Got a good deal last week on a service manual for the Blazer - $24.00.

On a good day, my Xplorer will go just over 60 according to the speedo. It should be close, because at 45 it matches the car. The 2 cycle is affected more by weather conditions/temperature than a 4 cycle, though. I used to have an Xpress that would do 65 on anything level, any day of the week, and 70 when everything was 'right'. Man I miss that thing, but wanted 4wd soooooo bad.

My Honda 300 will do (according to the Polaris speedo) 45. This is way topped out, engine screaming, hope I don't throw a rod, top speed. Top speed I feel safe sustaining is 40 or 41. I would say from what I know, Polaris are geared to run about the fastest, with Yamaha right there with them.

You will be extremely lucky to gain 5 mph from a pipe/clutch kit. It just gets you to your top speed quicker. No bolt ons will add 10 mph, unless it's an NOS kit.

With or without a headwind? Sitting normally or in the tuck position? One or two passengers? Uphill or level.

One thing which we should consider is "usuable top speed"

I have clocked various atvs on a variety of surfaces and the results varied widely.

Asphalt was unquestionably the best, but we don't drive on asphalt usually. Hard packed gravel came in a close second but there is not enough of that to go around. Which leaves us with dirt/sand and rocky rail road beds.

My Magnum will do 56 on an asphalt road when it winds up. The Xplorers will do slightly over 60 with the '95 models being the fastest. I have seen Xplorers with over a 550 lb go 56 MPH.

But when driving down a railroad grade with usual sized rocks the Magnum likes to top out at 49-50 MPH. It accelerates very quickly to 45 MPH uphill into the wind and on a rough surface and then less quickly accelerates the last 5 MPH. So would that make my usuable top speed 45?

In any event under normal riding conditions it hangs right in there with the HO and 400's leaving the Honda 300s and 450s in the dust.

The best part about owning a Polaris is the ability to ride over trails at 25 mph that would beat you to death on a King-Quad or a Honda 450.

The King Quads and Hondas are extremely durable and I love them from that standpoint, but for comfort - nothing beats a Polaris and it is always in the right gear.

I have never seen a Bombardier 650 in the middle or the back of any pack encountered on the trails.

They are always in the lead. Has anybody else noticed this?

xpedition2,

The only way you will get an Xpedition to do 60+ is with taller tires. Even then it will take awhile to get there. When I had the 27" 589's on my bike a friends Xpedition showed 54 on the speedo while mine was showing 48. By the time the speedo would show 56 it sounded like the motor was going to explode but it would pass my friends bike like he was standing still. By the way all of this was done on a long asphalt road.
