Default High rev 1996 polaris 250 trailblazer

Okay so i have a 1996 polaris 250 trailblazer that is revving up on its own when its just sitting there (idling) in neutral. the thing is when it starts revving up and reaches high rpm's it just stays there at that exact "speed" even when i shut off the key. the only way i can get it to stop is if i hit the throttle and then it revs down and finally turns off. Also, if i shift into forward before i turn on the quad it doesnt rev up it just idles normal until i start to ride than it will occasionally will rev up and speed up on its own untill i , again, tap the throttle hard then it revs down and i have complete control of the quad's throttle. PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!

usually a rising idle like you describe is caused by an air leak causding it to be extremly lean. only other thing is the throttle cable being stretched making it pull the throttle open.

Yea, thats another thing, when i had the air filter off and covered up the opening with my hand so just a little air could get in, it reved down to normal....my next question is how to fix that cuz i obviously cant keep my hand over the opening when im riding :-)

i would test it first to make sure thats it b4 you go pulling it apart. you need to eliminate the throttle cable to make sure its not that. spray some car cleaner or ether down by the seal to seal if the rmps pick up and by the carb boot, be very careful if you use starting fluid as its highly flammable and could cause a fire easily.
