Yeah .. the fuel gauges on the sportsmans are just for show .. mine never did work right. At the moment it never ever shows full. The best trail ride I've had we were doing fairly agressive trailing at 40 - 50mph most times, plus some pit running. Put on 136km when we stopped to reload. After trying to turn on the bike, the speedo/display flashed "Fuel" which we took to mean .. you ain't got any left. So 136km .. 15.6litres .. 11.5l/100km or 24mpg (imperial gallons that is). Would be about 20mpg US. And as I say .. that was riding at 40 - 50mph most of the time with probably a good hour and a half to two hours in the sand pits.

hmmmmmmm i dunno...it hurts my pee brain to think in those terms. but of course it depends on how many time you stop for a beer or take a pic. etc etc.....thats a crazy way to figure gas consumption if i road 10 mph i could ride a little over 4 hours or if i road 40mph i could ride a lil over 1 hour. now does that help?.....lol

I get around 20 mpg average with my 700efi just riding it. As far as my gas guage goes mine works great. I'll admit the reserve seems generous but I'd rather have it blinking to me saying fuel injected please feed me. My ex-wife once ran our car out of gas and fried 2 fuel injectors so running out of gas isn't good. Brian

Of course it depends on how hard and what terrain you are driving in to know the mileage. Most often the best way to measure how much gas you have used is to go by time. My bikes use .4 for one and .5 for the other, PER HOUR. If I don't count my lunch time, or any time waiting while someone is broken down and I'm just waiting around, then the time I ride (including occasional breaks) always produces the same results.

So if I ride for 5 hours on one, I will use 2 gallons of gas, while the other one will use 2.5 gallons. It works almost always to within a tenth of a gallon when I fill up.

To further clarify my findings. We did a ton of mixed riding in the morning and I got about 18. We did a good amount of very technical rock crawling and it dropped to 15 (About 3/4 rocks, 1/4 decent trails) When I've been buzzing along in 2wd at about 25 it gets about 20 or so.

My average is about 80 miles per tank. That is slow, fast, uphill, downhill and fun in snow or mud when the opportunity arrises.
Went 182 miles last Saturday and used a full tank, my 3 1/4 gallon flat pack and about 1 gallon from my back fuel tanks

I have a quistion for stendori. I have a 2008 sportsman 800, the fuel gauge box is empty with an f in it, does that mean its empty when the box is empty, and does the f mean fuel. i only have about 2 hours on it. should the tank be empty already.
thanks
