Default 97 Trail Boss gearcase output shaft

I'm looking at buying a 97 Trail Boss that has a broken gearcase output shaft.
How hard is this to change out?
They say it broke because the change came off and wedged between the sprocket and gearcase. The shaft is broke at the sprocket.
I see that a new shaft is around $250.00 How much due think it is worth? No plactic cracked tires 1/2 or more left. He said the dealer said it is worth $1300.00 without the broken shaft.
Can I change out the shaft without any special tools? Has anyone took their gearbox apart?

It isnt worth much more than $500 if that the way it is.But if you can get it cheap enough gte on Ebay and find a 2x4 tranny from any chain drive Polaris from 1994-2000 and it will swap out.You can get the whole tranny for less than you can a shaft.
