1. Dismount tire
2. Drill a 3/16 hole in each ****.
3. Insert 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" long 1/4" carriage bolt, with fender washer under the head, from the inside of the tire out.
4. Put a flat washer on the bolt where it exits the tire.
5. Put two nuts on the bolt.
6. Tighten the first nut down, then the second.
7. Lock the nuts together.
8. Take an intertube an cut it along the inside edge, the whole way around, and place another intertube inside. You are making a liner so the bolts don't cut the main tube.
9. Put the tube in the tire and remount the tire.
Once you have done this, there is no going back to having a normal tire. But we use old knobby tires, you don't need much tread. If you don't have any tires laying around, check with dealers. Most will give you used tires rather than pay a disposal fee. A couple of other tips. You can use stainless nuts or grade eight for additional wear. I have a XR600 with stainless nuts, and have seen very little wear in 3 years of riding. When I did my trailblazer, I used regular grade 5, and have replaced the outer nuts once in two years. I did have to use visegrips to take them off. For the front tires I used Coldcutter ice screws (avaliable from Dennis Kirk) and put slime in the tires. They aren't really needed in the woods, but if you hitsome ice, they are nice to have. When I do my 4x4 it will be with stainless nuts and
Locktite. It's a little more involved than putting a set of chains on, but works much better, and once done, you only need to change tires when the snow flies. I leave the bolt tires mounted, it gave me a good reason to put some shiny Douglas wheels on in the summer.
