The 427 and 428 are both part of the FE family, but the 427 has a different oiling system(its called a "side-oiler"), and from what I hear, was quite a bit more soul-stirring than the 428. And the 429 is the same block as the 460. Why all three with an inch difference makes no sense to me eithe. Oh well, I won't complain!!!

And to further complicate the issue: Don't forget the 406 ford, 410 and 430 Lincoln engines. Also, only some of the 427's were side oilers, the "high riser" engines got the oil modifications, if memory serves me correctly.

Hey, why not..... the 370, 429, and 460 are the same block, the 352, 360, 361, 390, 391, 406, 410, 427(side-oiler), and 428(cj and scj) are all the same, with the 361 and 391 having a forged steel crank(mostly found in f-500's), the 302 boss, 351 cleveland, 351 modified, and 400 are the same block, and the 289, 302 and windsor are the same blocks, although they have a different intake bolt pattern(from certain years). I think that takes care of the majority of 'em. Unless you want to talk about the mongrel 483 and 514 made for 2 years....
