Scramdaddy! Whats up? Ok I went through your cleaning tips today. Have to say that they were great. Got that puppy clean as a whistle. Have some questions for you.

I was riding today and i noticed that my chain was loose. Need tips on tightening it. Remember, im clueless. Didnt even really understand the manual since im not sure what parts are which.

Also can you send me a list of the products you use. Such as grease, chain lube, oil, tranny fluid. And I also need tips on greasing everything. How many zerks are there and how the heck do i grease them. Remember i dont have a grease gun or anything so if you can tell me what i need to grease this bad boy up that would be great.

Thanks for all your infinate wisdom!

I sure would like to get a hold of one of those 514 engines! Man what a whopper!I've heard of a 502 but not the 514. I bet they're impossible to find though. I would like to drop a 460 into my '82 some day. The good ole straight 6 300 is about shot. The ton has a 390, 3/4 ton 302, and the two 1/2 tons both have the 300's. They may be small but I like them (300's)

Hey spyder30 I knew my cleans tips would get that machine looking like new.

Check again on the chain it might only look lose your concentric drive picks up the slack when your riding.

Do this grab a ruler hold it on the swing arm (pointing up), and pull the chain up and read where it measures, if its at 1 1/2" or below in slack your alright if its above you need to tighten.

Now we need to lube that machine up go out and buy yourself a grease gun, get one that looks like thishttp://www.ajfittings.com/Grease%20Guns%20files/550.gif, you can pick one up at any car parts store or department store for about $15 bucks.

Now you need grease for it, I use pennzoil marine water proof grease it can withstand harsher conditions better than regular multi purpose grease, you can get it at any marine or department store.

For chain lube use an "o ring safe" type, you have an o ring chain on your scram and certain chain lubes can eat the rings, ones to buy are polaris, maxima, bel ray, golden spectro their all o ring safe, you can grab some at your local dealer.

You got 10w 40 polaris oil in your scrambler right now and after your break in your gonna need to change it to get the metal particals out a new engine leaves, thats normal for new engines sence the parts are so tight together.

You dont have many choices here cuz they need to be synthetic, not many companies make a synthetic 10w 40, synthetic blend but not synthetic, keep running the polaris synthetic 10w 40, they make their engines to be ran on thier brand oil which is not a bad thing the oil is very good.

Tranny fluid is an annual and does'nt need to be changed after break in, but once again go with polaris tranny fluid.

Now dont think I'm pushing polaris but I've scene people have problems with their machines when they try to run another engine or tranny lube.

Okay now lets pin point where all those wonderful zerks are, starting from the rear going to the front:
Zerk 1: on the axle bearing housing in the rear, thet gray thing that the axle is through.
Zerk 2: on both sides were the swing are attaches to the frame.
Starting at the front
Zerk 3: look at the steering post there one near the top where it sticks through the hood and on at the bottom where the ball joints connect.
Zerk 4: the a arms have one on each.
Zerk 5: your front drive shaft near on the u joint, the thing shaped like a + sign.
Zerk 6: the front hub, its near the guard for the cv joints.

To grease them take the tip of the grease gun shove it on top of one of the zerks, press hard and pump the lever to apply the grease, if grease is squirting outside the zerk that means you didnt push it on hard enough, if you feel pressure and no grease is coming out of the sides grease is going in, give about 4 or 5 five pumps.
The most difficult ones to get are the swing arm zerks cuz their way back their but dont neglect them unless you want to have the bushings replaced.

Remember to buy the same looking gun I showed you, the one with the flexible hose and grease after every wash or month what every is first.

I hope this info helps you if not write me back I tryed to explain the zerk part the best I could.

Talk to ya later,

hey hvydutyf250 the 514 is a crate motor that you can order at any ford motorsport dealership. Also the 289,302 and the 351 windsor don't share the same block all three have different deck heights and widths but the heads and a few other things are interchangeable. sorry but i don't ride a polaris. bleed ford blue and ride honda red!

Actually, I was in the junk-yard while building my 4X, and was looking for a flywheel. I see an old ford dump truck, got poking around, and looked under the hood. What I saw looked wider valve cover to valve cover than a 460, had a water cross-over to the front of both heads, and had a 4-barrel and distributor, so I knew it wasn't a diesel. I asked the guy who run the place what it was, and he said a 514, and also mentioned the 483. He said it was a factory motor Ford only made for a few years. Oh, and the truck was an early 60's. Anyway, I bought a flywheel for a 390, then spent another 20 bucks on a used(barely) clutch and pressure plate from a 460. After my uncle redrilled and balanced the flywheel for the 12-inch clutch, it has held up fine for all kinds of punishment(plowing, muddin', truck pulls)with absolutely no fade for the past 2 years. He also welded up some motor mounts to get it(428) to fit in the 84 frame were the sick-six once lived. I since bent the frame and bought a 77 straight axle from the nieghbor and what a difference old technology makes!!! I'm never going back to the TTB set-up on another truck as long as I live.

Okay all you heavy haulers beat this, 84 GMC S15 1/4 ton 2wd ext cab, with 1500 watt sound system worth about twice the price paid for the truck. Too narrow to put the quad in the back, and too light to pull it on trailer.

forgot to mention, it would have to pull around my 2000 SP, but because it weighs about 100 pounds more than the quad, not safe....

I didn't ask anyone to beat my S15, its already been beat by falling tree, and also pulled out of the ditch by the SP 500. But at least I've got my music, ah, the beautiful tunes of Culture Club and Milli Vannilli, it doesn't get any sweeter than that! hehehe....disco rocks
