i broke the stock piece of string that cam with my quad. the polaris dealer told me i have to buy a whole new assembly for $300 or more. all that is in there is a spring wrapped around the pull cord assembly. if yours won't retract. i would take the cover off and spray some wd40 in the spring to losen it up so it retracts (cause you don't want to take it apart and rewind the spring, big pain in the butt)
if you want to replace it, it is about 8 bolts to undo and the shifter linkage

either the spring unhooked or broke or is bound w/ maybe rust or something. it just unbols i beleave and worse case you could take it to someone to take apart if you dont feel comfortable doing it your self as the spring can be tricky.

They are very simple to replace and can even be repair most times. There is a small hook on the end of the wound spring. That hook takes all the pressure of the spring when you pull your starter rope out. The failure point is usually that little hook (just a bent piece of the spring in the center of the coil). You can rebend what is left on the spring if you take it off and reheat it with a torch. Make sure you reheat it before bending it though because springs are very brittle metals and that end will likely just snap off if you try to bend it without reheating.

How do you reattach the rope wheel to that little hook? I tried but couldn't get mine to line up right. Then the spring came all the way out. Is there an easy way to get it back in?

i know your pain as my cam came through the side of the housing. iI just pulled the rest of the guts out and sealed the holes with rtv black. I also make sure i have a good battery before i go out. The assembly lists for around 240$. Check out Breese Lawn and Garden in Breese, Il. He has most parts in stock and this part you can get for around 180$ if needed.
