700 efi idle issue
#1
Hey guys, I have a 04' SP700 efi with about 500miles on it. Today while riding after some hard riding in humid 90 degree weather, when i went down to idle from full throttle she would stall out. Upon starting her she would die right back out. If i started her and kept on the gas she would continue to run but then idle down to 850 rpm down to like 740rpm and then stall. Once i started her again and rode her hard for 5 minutes she would hold an idle and proceeded to ride fine the rest of the day. First off what is the standard rpm idle once warm? Secondly with only 500 miles on it im at a loss for what could have caused her to stall. She has also done this once on a cold start. I could understand if she was carb'd, but that efi should keep her in check. Should i changedplugs? They shouldnt crap out this quickly. At what time does the fuel filter need to be changed? Any ideas fellas?
Thanks
Thanks

idle is around 1150 rpms. maybe the high humi. had something to do it w/ the changing of the dense air?? there is no adjustment on the idle for the efi's except taking it to a dealer. i had 830 miles on my 06' and didnt even look at my spark plugs so i would say no to changing them unless theres a fouling problem. fuel filter is to be replaced every 2 yrs or 200 hrs.

You might have to clean out your throttle body.....If you have done any riding in dusty conditions, sometimes dirt gets sucked into the throttle body and cakes up...Pull off your boot to the throttle body and open the butterfly and look in there...If there is ANY kind of grime in there it will upset the rpm's....Get some throttle body cleaner and spray the grime and clean with Q tips..That's what I did after a long day of dusty riding a few couple years ago..It worked for me....

Hey thanks alot, I'm willing to bet thats what it is. The past two weeks of riding have been excruciatingly dusty. And i never had a problem with it before. And when i mean dusty I mean 4 hours of riding and my normally pasty white face is black. Could that also mean that my K&N air filter is not doing its job? I've cleaned the filter and re oiled it but man if its all dusty like that then would a stock paper filter actually filter better?

I can almost guarantee you that's what it is........I anxious to hear back from you and see how you made out....After that happened to me I removed the K&N cleaned it, oiled it but I put the stock filter back in.....I'm not putting down K&N, some guys swear by them and that's fine I just went back to stock....If your gonna put the K&N back in you might want to get a pre filter for it..

Well I took the air box out and took at peak at the throttle body. The whole tube was coated with dirt and the butterfly was ringed with dust. I'm VERY disappointed with K&N. I guess I will go back to the stock filter and see if i notice a difference. But considering I just thoroughly cleaned and oiled the filter before my last outing i did not anticipate getting that much dirt to enter the engine. I cleaned the throttle body thoroughly and idle returned to around 1050. It danced a little lower and maybe she should be higher but its an instant improvement over 750 to 840.

Glad I was of help to you.....1050 seems just a tad low......Mine idles at around 1150, like Sten said.......Just make sure the TB is cleaned to perfection because every little bit left behind will change your rpm's...Good luck.
