Hello i am new to this forum. i am a ind tech teacher at an intermediate school and i recently purchased a 1992 polaris 250 that needs work. my students wanted to rebuild a 4 wheeler this year for their project. it has a busted piston and the starter has oil leaking into it. it came with a new piston and ring kit and i was wondering if any one has any advice on fixing it. i dont know much about 2 cycle engines so any help will be great. thanks.

Time and patience young grasshopper. I've built a drag machine out of one of these, and know it pretty well. What is your budget for the rest of the project?
By the way welcome to the forum. Doc

sounds to me like if your going to teach your students how to do it , first i would get a book on basic 2 stroke operation and understand the basic concept , then get a factory service manual for your model because it sounds like you might have a crank seal problem too , depeding on your time i would tear it down completley to inspect and replace seals/bearings as nessesary ,giving each student one piece to clean and refurbish during disassembly(builds pride factor) also it will stretch out a otherwise quick going rebuild and give alot of hands on experience, plus your finished project could be sold to finance the next learning project
the 250 air cooled is a great basic quad to learn the basics on and they rip pretty good too

have fun,
Rich

ftwflh,

Is that the going prices for them? Man, and
to think I bought a 1987 Honda POS for
my nephew. BUT it is still kicking hard,
nothing went wrong so far mechanically
not to say it won't later.

In running shape they are going for close to $600 but you can double that parting them out.
