Sportsman 500 hard to shift, creeps in gear at idle
#11
There's a fiber washer #18 and a brass washer #2 that do wear out over a period of time(depending on how much you ride) that need to be changed along with greasing the one way bearing if the washers are ever replaced. Takes a spider tool to separate the clutch.2001 to 2003 model 500s were the ones that I had the most wear on along with creeping problems. Again it depends a lot on driving habits. Some would last some wore out quicker than others. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

I took the belt cover off today, and the clutch is not prematurely engaging (v pulleys) but the belt is tight enough that it is turning the transmission pulley a bit, even at idle. A friend thinks it might be the oil level, which is just below the safe mark.
Could this be the problem, and can anybody recommend a sustitute oil available at Auto Zone or Wal-mart for the trans oil? I also don't see a fill plug as shown in the owner's manual. Does it fill through the dipstick?
Thanks.
