Sportsman 500 hard to shift, creeps in gear at idle
#1
I took the belt cover off today, and the clutch is not prematurely engaging (v pulleys) but the belt is tight enough that it is turning the transmission pulley a bit, even at idle. A friend thinks it might be the oil level, which is just below the safe mark.
Could this be the problem, and can anybody recommend a sustitute oil available at Auto Zone or Wal-mart for the trans oil? I also don't see a fill plug as shown in the owner's manual. Does it fill through the dipstick?
Thanks.

what yr is this, is this ebs? the oil would have nothing to do w/ this. either you need to shim the secondary or the ebs bushing(if it has it) is worn out.

It is a 2001 with EBS. I kind of thought it was mechanical. i can make new machined parts if necessary. How would i go about gettting the technical service data to solve this, or can you just tell me what to replace?

w/ ebs, creeping is usually caused by the the one way bushing(ebs) in the primary clutch (drive clutch on engine) wearing out and needs to be replaced. you need a specail puller to get if off and then special tools to pull it apart to replace. you could try shimming the secondary clutch first by putting a shim in the middle(between) of the clucth to spread the sheeves a little. just a thought.

yes it was hard to put into gears no grinding but solid thunk when it grabed

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it is an idle issue. my wheeler never acted like this for many years, even when it was idling high.
is the one way bushing located inside if the grroved belt pilley that is between the sheaves one the engine side?

I have similar problem and would like more information on what you call the ebs one way bushing. I have the cover off and am comparing what I see to the microfiche from bikebandit.com. which one of these parts is the same as the one way bushing? Thanks for you help

i just had the same problem guys! i just pulled the foot piece screws out and slid the plastic cover out! then i sprayed it with my compressor and all kinds of dust flew out!!
then i took both hands and moved the clutch back and forth theres a spring in there that allows it to move back and forth!! then i just sprayed with wd40 and moved it back and forth again too get the wd40 worked in and its all good now!!! it just needed a good clening and a little tlc!!!
