Default Ball-Joint 1988 TrailBoss 4X4 ??

I'm not sure about the 88's, mine is a 87 and I know that the ball joints are of a different design. Mine actually screw into one part of the A Arm while the later models bolt onto a bracket on the A Arm.

Default Ball-Joint 1988 TrailBoss 4X4 ??

I have found a solution to the ball joint issue that I feel will work out well. I found a NAPA Parts man that spent a great deal of time trying to help with my dilema. He found a ball joint for a tractor (Part #732-1134) that I have been able to install on my machine with some modifications.

The ball joint has female thread so I had to use a 20-1/2 bolt with about a inch and a 1/2 shank that did not have threads on it. I bought a 20-1/2 LH die and threaded the shank so that this would go into the A-Frame while the orginal threaded protion of the bolt would go into the new ball joint. I also had to cut off about 1/2 inch of the threaded portion of the ball joint so that it's size would match the original (use a cutoff portion of a bolt with a hole drilled in it for backing out, in the ball joint before cutting to chase the thread after cutting). The new ball joint is rated for 5200 # working load while the static load is over 10,000# so I should be okay but I will watch it closely when I get to use it this spring.

I have pictures of it both side by side of the old joint and on the machine but I can't find a way to post a picture on this site.

That lists shows all the newer style Ball Joints ----- ours is the type that looks like a Tie Rod end only used on the 1987 & 1988 250 4X4 Trailboss.

I had thought of making a mount and going to the new style - but that is fairly involved.

Binford552's advice sounds like away to try to go. [img]i/expressions/heart.gif[/img]

I'll look up the NAPA part number -- and give it a try.

I think I had mine (Pull starter) apart once -- but can't remember what all I did.

I will try and check the Polaris repair manual if I find it - which I have on these machines.

Hi Binford - I tried my NAPA store ------ they would have to order it.

But I just found this listed on ebay ------------- ( I think if you click on this - or maybe copy it and paste it)

======================

I am checking on the dimensions of the 1988 and newer Ball-Joint -- thinking possibly boring out on the strut bottom and mounting it like the 1988 and newer.
It would also require modifying the lower suspensions A - arm to accept the Ball-Joint stud.
