wont shift

Hi everyone, I'm new to this board , but I seem to have a problem and not sure if its just minor fluid being wrong or internal trams. problem. When I go to shift it from either high forward or low forward to reverse it seems as if it doesn't want to engage, all it does is grind the gears. Have made sure the linkages are in correct alginment, new fluid in trans but still same problem. It's a 1996 Polaris 300 explorer. Alos it does it from reverse to the 2 drive forward gears. Any ideas would really help. Thanks ahead.

could be a number of things:
clutch buttons on the driven clutch worn -- most likely
idle on engine set to high
belt could possibly have enough wear to make it grab the clutches and spin the transmission
normally not gonna be inside the gearcase tho

thanks eggenz, at least that will give me some type of idea to where to look for the problem. was all the time thinking it was in the gear case with not the right fluid. but have changed it and made sure its ok. again thanks much

If my memory is correct, the shift pattern on that is High, Neutral, Reverse in a line, with Low to the right and up. Linkage adjustment may also be the culprit. If the frame has been tweaked at all or any bolts mounting the gear selector or transmission have loosened this problem could occur. The gear selector is trying to move the linkage to specific positions. If things have moved, you may be biased one way or another such that the transmission shifting components are not able to fully engage the disired gear.
As mentioned in earlier post, CVT issues such as poor belt alignment, or idle problem may cause the transmission input shaft to spin-up such that shifting components just ratchet until things slow down.

Thanks Guys. all of the things you guys have mentioned I will look into first. Seems a year ago I had to align to linkage's , because she would stick in low or reverse. But after that I didn't have problems until late in the year. But this weekend I will tear down and see if I can find the problem that you guys have offered the advice on. Thanks again

Did you check to see if there is any play where the shift linkage goes into the transmission case? My 1996 Magnum 425 is worn at the case where the shift linkage goes into the trans and does the same thing. If that is your problem, has anyone had any luck machining out the holes in the case and adding bushings?

mkgearhead mine there at that point with the linkages disconected seems to be real firm, no platy what so ever. had to plow snow todat and it worked real good if i used only the high reverse gears, which is not what i like to do. but at the end of an hour long then even tdoing it that way caused me some greif. going to get a chance friday or saturday to tear into more . thanke for the thought.
