06 Sportsman 700 valves
#1
Just hitting 50 hours on my 06 700. I will have had it a year come christmas. Took it hunting last week and noticed when I parked it that the exhaust by the head was cherry red, and it seems like the motor is a bit noisey. I am thinking I need the valves adjusted. Am I correct.

That motor hasn't got adjustable valves. It has hydraulic lifters and roller rocker arms.

harley is correct about the hydraulic lifters, hence no valve clearance adjustment can be made, it is always at zero clearance.
The exhaust manifolds on the short 2 into 1 header pipe are fairly thin, and therefore get very hot and glow. I don't agree with it nor do I like it, but it's more normal than abnormal.
As far as the noise, it seems fairly common for the twins to make some racket. Some say it is from the clutch, other say its from the water and oil pump, could also be the counter-balancer shaft spring. I'd just as soon have it very quiet, like a Can-Am twin, but have just learned to live with it.
Check out THIS video. It is my 800 and maybe what you're hearing it just like it. Please let me know if the noise you're hearing is what mine sounds like.
Good luck!!

Mine is making the exact same noise....
Sounds like something is clanking around..
The dealer is giving me my first service free, what should be done on a first service. My oil has never been changed. I think I have 350 miles on it.
Thanks,
Flip

Dude that noise is horrendous! Did your dealer say it's normal? I've never heard one sound that way! It still runs good I assume?

I haven't brought it to the attention of the dealer. It has sounded like that since new, actually I only noticed it after about 5 hours, I swear the engine just purred for the first few hours. I've watched (listened) to to every video of Sportsman 800's I can find on youtube and elsewhere, and most of the 800's sound just like mine. It runs perfectly, just over 30 hours now, just doesn't sound the greatest. Oh well.

I wish i was rich, I'd come to your town to hear what it sounds like. And drink beer, somewhere! It is possible that the cam microphone picks something up that sounds worse than it really may be. I don't know. I just put a RZR together this morning and it didn't sound that way. If you ever take to a dealer and they deem it a problem, let me know what is is would you?
