Do you have the axle out of the machine yet? If not you need to first pull the axle out of the machine, Do you know how to do this part of it. After you get it out, cut the boot off so you can see what you are doing. Now look for a snap ring inside a grove on the inside edge of the joint. The snap ring will be inside the open end of the joint not the end with the splines on it. You will need a sharp pick to be able to get the snap ring out of the grove. Push the pick between the body of the joint and the snap ring it should push out away from the joint far enough to allow you to walk the ring the rest of the way out of the joint. Now pull out on the axle. You will need to clean up the joint both inside the cup and the axle end to get rid of any dirt that may have gotten in. After cleaning repack the joint and the inside of the cup with the grease that comes with the joint. Slide the new boot onto the axle shaft, and then put the axle joint back into the cup and work the snap ring you pulled out earlier back into the cup. Now pull the boot into position and install the new clamps.

first thing is, did you ruin the cv joint it self by driving it w/ a bad boot? if its making any kind of clicking noise chances are the joint is bad.

Theres no need to change a whole axle just because a boot is busted. If the cv is clicking then yes you would need a new cv joint but just for a boot no.
