Default engine heater

I hate rolling the engine over on those below 0 days. Noticed this coolant heater. Anyone have any experience or comments on this unit? Not really sure how it works. Looks like it's some kind of inline hose deal. I guess along with a heater it has a pump to warm and circulate the coolant.

Do you really need an engine heater? Does your machine take a long time to start when cold? What weight oil are you using? Would it be ok to start up and let idle to warm itself up before driving?

I'm sure it would be okay to start it cold and let it warm up. Mine have no problems starting up in this arctic weather. But warm oil is better than cold oil, there's no arguing that.

The oil tank heater my also be a good bet, and it's cheaper.

duffus ... great, let me know how it works. Is that Fahrenheit or Celsius?

badmoose ... It starts fine. The coldest I started it so far was -25C (-13F). I'm using recommended oil and always let it warm up before I ride. It can get mighty cold around here, north of Ottawa. I think a heater would relieve some of the stress and wear incurred from those real cold startups. But you're right I don't really need one.

dcso3009 ... I don't think I can use the oil tank heater - have to check but I think mine has a plastic oil tank.

sorry to take so long to reply..

I plugged it in for 30 min and it was -10F out. It started much easier than without the heater. I still let it idle with the choke on for ~5 minutes. Look at purepolaris for the "diesel" engine block heater.. i purchased that one because they look identical-- they just charge more for the gasoline engine heater.. go figure.

I put a similar model, though specific for the 600/700 on mine two years ago. Nothing but success. My Polaris dealer denied they existed, I got a part # off this website and ordered the "Snowmobile block heater" the actual package specified "Also for Sportsman 600/700."
