w/ the key on try taking a heavy wire and jumping the 2 big solnoide bolts w/ the cables on. if it turns over the starter then the solnoide is bad if not chances are the starter is bad.

Before you replace anything do some troubleshooting first.
First try watching the headlights when pressing the starter button. If they get very dim or go out when you try to crank then the battery is weak.
Check for loose connections at all the cable ends.
Try jumping the large studs on the selinoide to see if it cranks. If it does than it is the selinoide.
If it dos not, then check for voltage at the starter, If you have voltage at the starter when you press the button then it is most likely the brushess in the starter are frozen in place with rust. (It happens a lot with mine...) rebuild the starter. kits are available very reasonable on E-Bay.
Good Luck.
Remember the pull start is really a backup starting method so you don't get totaly stranded if your battery goes dead. I would hate to be out on a long ride and pull the string and have it break, leaving me stranded.
