Default Polaris Sportsman 500 question

I ran my 1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 out of gas. I had a really hard time starting it (approx. 20 mins), after refueling. I think alot of fuel got into the oil so when it finally started it sounded like there was no oil in the motor. I shut it off after about 15-20 seconds and did a oil change/filter. restarted the machine but still have loud ticking on idle and lower rpm. The machine runs ok but I'm wondering what happen and/or is it possible the taps if there is taps need adjustment as I'm no mechanic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanx Duty

Why do you think there is fuel in the oil?

The ticking is probably the oil pump. Put a wooden broom stick or something from your ear to the oil pump and you will see what I mean. Its normal and nothing to worry about. Usually they tick from new, weird it took so long to make itself present.

Yes you get hard starting with gas in the oil, because the oil is needed to seal the rings and get high compression. Gas dilutes the oil to thin for the "seal the ring effect".

I could not start my flooded Ford F-150,I smelled the oil dip stick and it was like gas, I changed the oil and off it went ,no problem.

Hello TLC, Thanx for your advice. You hit it right on the head. I used a piece of wood dowelling and it was definitely the fuel pump making all the noise. Do you think that the pump should be replaced? Thanx again, Duty

There are many noisy oil pumps. You mostly hear it at idle and it goes away once you bring up the rpms?

Both our Sportsman's have ticking oil pumps, the 97 has been ticking since new and that was 7000 miles ago.

You said "fuel pump" but you were really meaning the oil pump?

Other who have noticed.

TLC: Sorry about that, yes, I meant the oil not the fuel pump. Thanx again, for the answers. Take care.
