After all the posts on the Hawkeye clutch mod, have we come up with a consensus on the best roller weight for the Hawkeye clutch? I'm kicking around the idea of ordering a new set of rollers for my '06 and have read what I think are all of the old threads on this subject and it looks like there is no real agreement on the best setup. I realize there is a bit of fudge factor here depending on your riding style and conditions but just hoping for a little input on what is working for everyone else.
I had the 8-14 gram rollers stock which was OK with the stock tires, I'm presently running 25" Swamplite tires with 2 rollers removed, (6-14gram), while it is very snappy on the bottom end with good torque, it has lost a good amount of top end speed, running out of top end power rather early and over revving at the top. I have come to the conclusion that I need to add roller weight to better match the clutch with the power curve of the engine.
I need a little help to figure out which set of rollers would work best the 13 Gram or 12 grams...
Also, has anyone given any thought to mixing roller weights, i.e. 4-14 gm and 4-12gm rollers in one clutch setup as long as they are kept in opposing pairs?

 

Okay I change my tires from to 22 to 25 that is a 12 percent tire increase
Theory says 12 percent increase in mass

calculation that I came up with is if you had a gram weight machine you could drill the rollers and bore them out to 12.37 which should bring you back into the power you had before with the same speed and Acceleration.

8x12.37=98.68 grams roller weight modded roller weights
6x14.00=84.68 grams roller weight stock 14 gram roller wieghts
The difference between these 2 weights is 15% percent
the top speed of the 6 roller 14.00 gram roller mod is 42 mph
the new top speed with the 8 roller mod at 12.37grams would be 49.00 mph
So really i think the 12 gram rollers from Polaris would work great and still maintain that nice top speed.
(My nephew the Engineer showed me how to figure all that sutff up)

 

Hey Ricky that makes sense, would tire weight difference need to be figured in also? The Swamplites weigh 19 and 21 lbs compared to what ever the stock tires weigh...

I put in the 12g rollers and they work great. I have 25" mudlites on mine

 

thanks for the input guys, sounds like the 12gr set is the way to go for me since Tiders 25" Mudlites are in the same neighborhood weight wise as my Swamplites...I can always count on great info here!

In the motorcycle racing wrd they say for every 7 pounds you lose on a bike its equal to 1 hp, I think just by changing clutch rollers it also changes some HP on that engine , I looked at the clutch while it was running wen i revved it it felt Lighter if you know what I mean, the engine didnt feel lethargic and it had more snap to it, but with those bigger tires it is heavier and it will wear out other parts quicker.

 

i wonder if w/ the 400 w/ the bigger tires if you would have to change any clutch parts? this engine has alot more ponies then the 300 does.

 

I would bet they would increase the top speed on that 400 but would slow down in the midrange and kinda drag till it hit the sweet spot on that 455 engine, Id try it and see what happens and if does fall down on the midrange either change the rollers to a lighter setup or raise the needle in the carb one notch, hey with the bigger tires id wonder it would run 60mph ?
