LOUD METALIC POP
#1
WHILE FOLOWING A FRIENDS 99 SP500 HE JUMPED A 12-15" LOG AND CAME DOWN HARD ON THE REAR TIRES(MOST LIKELY UNDER FULL THROTLE) IN ABOUT 20" OF SNOW AND SEEMS TO HAVE DAMAGED THE DRIVETRAIN. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS IT ALL GEAR OR A COMBO OF GEAR AND CHAIN IN THE TRANNY. BECAUSE NOW HE GETS A STEADY CLUNK UNDER EVEN SLIGHT POWER AND HE WANTS TO KNOW WHATS IN THERE SO HE CAN GET IT FIXED.

Is it a LOUD METALIC POP or a steady clunk? (don’t post in all caps please) Your friend may have just burned a spot in his belt and it’s thumping on the inside of the cover as it goes around. Tell him to reach down with is left hand a feel the cover as he hears the noise. If it’s the belt he’ll feel it hitting the cover. If not your friend has damaged his machine through abuse and unless he’s an “ace wrench” he’d better get it to a dealership with a good mechanic.

Might have broke the CV Shaft. The cage around the bearings under the CV Boot. I might be misspeaking as I am not sure it the shaft drive is like it is on the front of the scramblers or not. I had a simular situation after meeting a tree with the left front of a scrambler.

when the tires came down there was a LOUD METALIC POP after that just a steady clunk. we dont think its the belt because we jacked up the back and slowly let the tires spin and used a old automotive type stethascope on the case and it seems to be the loudest by the output for the front shaft drive. and yes he does abuse it!!!

he hopes its just a u-joint on the front shaft. but it could be a cv joint in the rear also.
but i think its damage in the case$$$ouch!!!

OUCH is right! The parts book shows a total of two chains in the rear gear case, not that I’m saying that’s his problem.
Anything we’d suggest here is pure speculation, except that your friend may want to consider a simpler brand of ATV like a Honda for his riding “style.” In my opinion Polaris machines are the most comfortable and capable on the market. But they won’t stand up to abuse and misuse like a Honda may.

I would check the simplest things first. Before you go tearing into the tranny cases, check the chain VERY CAREFULLY. I was log hopping and bent the chain guard (the one that runs along the bottom of the chain next to the swingarm). I didn't land full throttle or anything, but when I wheelied over it, a knot or something stuck up high enough to catch it. Now whenever the master link comes around it catches on the guard, making a 'clunk, clunk, clunk' sound. I straightened it out best I could, but it still does it intermittently, especially when the chain starts to get a little loose. If you look at the chain carefully, you will notice the master link is a little wider than the rest of the chain. This gives it an 'edge' that catches as it comes around. I would also check to be sure that he didn't break a roller on one link also. This could happen if he landed full throttle. I would bet this is what happened. About pulled my hair out until I found out what was klunking on my Xplorer.

OOPS! Sorry, I feel like a dummy. When I first read your post I thought you said SC500 as in Scrambler (chain drive). Reading it again I see you meant SP500 (IRS shaft drive).
Does his have the knuckle style rear axle joints on it or the CV style joints? The knucle style u joints are known to break when they get loose.
If it is a CV joint try to see if it is internal to the case or in a joint.
