The manufactures do this on every bike i guess to make it sound bigger then it really is or so it can compete in a different class. Like a 400ex comes with a 397cc motor instead of a full 400. So technically speaking it would be a 350 but thats not the model name.

Now for 2008 they make the Sportsman 400 H.O. ........But it has a 455cc motor.............................They call this model smaller then it really is!!!!...............

Polaris did NOT make the 350 in 1994 - 1994 was the first year for the 400 engine.
The 2 stroke 350 engine was actually 352cc's and the 2 stroke 400 engine was 378cc's.
There is a metal plate welded to the frame (usually by the shift lever) that gives the model number of the quad - it will start with a W and then the year digits (ie. 94) then the model in 4 digits (ie. 8140 - first 2 of these are the frame, second 2 are the engine)
There are some distinct differences between the 350 frame and 400 frame - most noticeable is the transmission shifter - the 350 frame used a shift handle that sits in notches, the 400 frame uses a shift lever box, and has 2 shift rods.
