1995 400 Scrambler Starter problems
#1
I finally broke the pull string for the starter today .. si I figure now is the time to get my electric starter to work ....
Right now when I hit the start button I just hear a click .... I assume that the starter solenoid is ok behind the seat ....
Can it be safe to say that the starter is bad ?
Anything else I can try or do before I start to pull the starter out ? I think I need some clutch pullers and special tools to do this ....
Can anyone give me some advice on removing the starter? I am without my Scrambler until I get this fixed....
Thanks

first i would check the ground on both the solenoid and the starter then check for power gitting to the starter if you do halfto take the starter off you don't halfto remove the clutches or have any special tool's first remove the right side foot well then the recoil thear is 2 bolts for the starter in side theare then the skid plate theare is 2 more bolts or nuts up in theare then the starter should come off hope this helps you

Try jumping the solenoid posts with a screwdriver - you are bypassing the operation of the solenoid and going straight to the starter. If the starter turns your solenoid is bad. If you get no sparks and no starter turning, your starter brushes are bad or stuck. If you get sparks and no starter turning, your starter windings are shorted.
You can get a brand new starter w/warranty off Ebay for about $65.
You really don't need special tools to remove the starter, the skid plate will need to be removed, the recoil starter cover comes off and there are (2) 10mm head bolts inside there to be removed - these hold the front of the starter.
Underneath, where the starter is, remove the 10mm nut holding the positive wire to the starter, remove the (2) 10mm bolts holding the back of the starter to the starter bracket. Now, there are (2) 10mm bolts holding the starter bracket to the engine - LOOSEN these 2 bolts to give you "slack" to pull the starter out. Clean up the gasket surface, grease the bushings for the bendix (1 on the starter, 1 on the recoil start cover), and install the new starter reverse of what you took the old one off.

I was able to get the starter off.... THANKS! I am getting 9.5 Volts at the starter when I hit the start button .... Is this a normal range? Also the starter is bad ... I took a part hoping I could clean it up and it would work ... It has corrosion everywhere.... would barely turn and one of the brushes were damaged ...
So looks like I am going to get a new starter ...
Thanks
