The cheapest trick for more speed is change the front tires from toe out to toe in.
Normal adjustment is 1/8" to 1/4" toe out. I adjusted mine to 0" in one time and the next time 1/8" toe in.
At 0" it was 3 mph faster, but spooky handling. At 1/8" toe in, speed increase was the same but handling was a lot better.

I've had one up to about 60 and it didn't feel entirely stable. Big bouncy flotation tires and a locked rear axle don't equate to razor sharp handling qualities.
I've ridden a Prairie that had automotive tires and rims on it (yes it looked as ridiculous as it sounds) it handled surprisingly well. I'm not sure exactly how fast it was going due to the added height of the tires and the malfunctioning speedometer but I'd guess around the 55-65 mark and it wasn't really unnerving. The engine wasn't howling either because the tires were so tall.
I've got a 95 425 Magnum that will run about 45 or 50 top speed and it isn't really stable at those speeds. It just feels too fast for the ride and handling. I drive it fairly long distances to town on gravel and some pavement and around 35 or so is about right for keeping the rpms down to a decent level and to allow decent control for maneuvering. Also keeping it around 35 or 40 is better on the mileage than keeping it open full throttle.
Like others I like a powerful machine for the grunt and torque but top speed isn't so much of an issue. If it will do 50 on the top end that is plenty fast for me. However I prefer it to be able to get to 50 like a rocket and to have more than enough power to pull things, haul and carry heavy loads.

I can do 45 at half throttle, and full throttle isn't THAT much faster, really. When I get on a dirt road sometimes I still go WOT because I know it's only a few minutes until it's back into the tight stuff. It's my only chance to go nuts, and I lean ahead as far as I can while still sitting, to keep it going in a straight line.
