Hello,

Just picked up a 400 that looks pretty clean and rides nice. Just wondering what sort of tune-up I should do as a new owner. Will be used pretty lightly to ride with the kids. Anything special I should be aware of or look out for? Thanks in advance...

I was hoping someone answered by now. I would start with a new spark plug and air filter if it needs it. Grease everything and check your belt. It shouldn't need any real tune-up if it runs okay.

thanks for the reply

did the plug and it has a K&N filter so I cleaned and re-lubed

on the belt, anything in particular I should look for? probably a good idea to have a spare belt on hand?

lastly, my coolant seems to be a bit under the min line. do I fill at cap or at the red capped opening on the side of the coolant tank? that one's a little hard to get at

thanks

Here's what I would do. Make sure it's full at the cap with the engine running. That way you know there aren't any air bubbles in it, then fill to the right level on the overflow. If you need a funnel to reach and don't have one, you can make one out of a paper plate. The grease-resistant kind are great. Tear it straight across from the edge to the middle and make a cone. Tear the tip off the cone if the hole is too small.

No problem. You can get some help from other threads here too. I saw a thourouh pre-ride checklist someone was going through. Just check the name of the threads for clues. If you run into problems there are guys here that know A LOT more than me.
