diagnosing stator
#1
How do I test the stator. the 96 400 sport I just picked up has the battery unhooked and runs good for about 1/2 hr. when it gets hot it acts like the ignition is grounding out (backfiring and no power) I tried to charge and hook up the battery but when I did it acted like it does when hot (popping and no power) I unhooked it and it was fine for a little while. I tried to check the battery cables for voltage and there was none. when I ohmed the stator wires I got about 10 ohms is this ok or not??

LIGHTING COIL yellow / red to yellow 0.3 ohms
yellow / brown to yellow 0.17 ohms
exciter coil black / red to red 226 ohms
pulsar coil white / red to white 97 ohms
hope this helps, if not let me know, i can get whatever information you need.
also you should have the battery fully charged before connecting to machine, after connecting then do your voltage test. run machine up to 3000-4000 rpm, then put your test leads on the battery posts, should charge 14v +, if output is as specified, stator is good.

this machine has to have a GOOD battery to run properly. after you charge your battery have a load test performed, test cranking power of battery, also will show you if there is a bad cell or cells in battery, will also cause the same running condition. most auto parts stores willl test your battery for free.

when I hooked the battery up it showed 12 volts but the machine would not turn over. just sounded like the solenoid was (buzzing/clicking) when I pulled it, it started right up but no power at all. I re-removed the positive cable and it ran fine. It didnt seem to like the voltage in the battery. I will try to re ohm it with the wires you listed. where is the exciter? is it on the stator? I know this machine was ridden for about 2 years with no battery,so I think it took out the stator or exciter or voltage regulator.

The 400 Sport uses the smaller 150 watt stator system, rather than the 200 watt system of the Sportsman models - so the testing is a little different than stated above.
Exciting coil (ignition power source) - black/red to brown/white = 120 Ohms
Lighting coil - yellow/red to yellow = 0.25 - 0.35 Ohms
Based on the history you listed, if the stator system checks out OK, I would start looking at the voltage regulator.

well I bought a used stator assembly, voltage reg,cdi and rev limiter off E-bay and started to pull it apart today also got a service manual from a buddy. I ohmed the exciting coil, and lighting coil and it seemed fine but I wonder if, since the problem is only after it get's hot if I need to check it hot. any thoughts??

compare readings on both units while cold, then run with "faulty stator"until it runs bad and check all wires while it is still hot. have you had the load test on the battery yet ? a battery will can have 12 or 13 volts but when you try start something with it, there is not enough amperage to start. it can also make it seem like it has a stator or ignition problems.
