I've always run nothing but stock. I don't know if it's the best, but it's nearly zero maintenance. I just wash my prefilter once in awhile and toss the old filter when it plugs up. You don't spend several hours out each year washing, drying, and oiling it. And I know Polaris engineers designed it for my machine. Some of the aftermarket filters seem to be more like a generic "one size fits all because we said it fits".

alot of guys run k&n or uni filters for better air flow, but imo better flow is less protecton from dirt. ive run nothing but the stock air filters and prefilter on both of my 800's. i just clean them once in awhile and if water gets in the air box replace it.

yeah, like sten said the aftermarket might let dirt in,dirt is grit, grit is bad,i don't see an advantage to alittle more flow vs dirt going past the filter,my brother-in-law has one on his bike, took the filter off + DIRT ALL UP IN THERE!!! cleaned it all up oiled it,drove around harshly(cause who does'nt)+ after about 1-1/2 hours there was dirt past the filter again!

Common sense appears pretty common about this subject.
