Default Your Opinion On Upgrading Or Fixing Speed Problems.....

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Originally posted by: Scootergptx

What can it be? its in the shop right now and its only been reaching about 35mph. so can anyone help?

Thanks,

depending on how fast you want to go theres no replacemnet for displacement. if you want to just retain the orginal speed the bike has and its not a piece of junk then fix it as long as it doesnt break the bank. if its lost some speed check the secondary clutch to see if the buttons are gone or the belt is junk. does the engine still have good compression? i cant remember about the first post you put on about the bike.

48 sounds about right to me, But one thing you might be overlooking is tire pressure, If you running 3-5 pounds in each tire then there alot of the drag, MY old hawkeye would run about 44 with 5 psi tire pressure, when I needed to go faster I aired them up to 10 psi and ran fatser with less resistance.

RP,

Wouldn't ya tend to lose some traction or controllability of the quad (safety concern)
with double the amount of PSI and running at higher speeds? I hadn't done this but
it would seem that higher PSI would create more bounce. No expert here, humble to
learn these dynamics.

Hey, I just noticed you upgraded, still have the HWKeye?

Yep I upgraded to the 500 EFi and i love it,the ole hawkeye is Gone gone gone I kinda MIss ole Polly, On the higher air pressure in tires, it actually handles better with more air pressure, Rides rougher on bumpy stuff and wears tires out quicker, as far as stabilty its better, say on a dirt road or flat ground less resistance anyway, you dont really lose traction cause the offset of weight vs drag is present, More tire pressure means less drag which mean less power to move it.
Sounds weird but My Own opinion of course, Ive seen guys on the river running 2 psi in their tires and wonder why it wont hit 40 on the sand, they gain more contact patch but really the drag is hurting them more than anything.

On a quick note, with our new 500 i keep the air pressure at the factory requirement of 5 psi, It has the power to move itself with me on it

Okay still a little confused here. Are you saying its
better to go higher as much as doulbe the PSI level
from Stock recommendations but only for the smaller
qauds? (I.E. Trail Boss and Hawkeye types)

Or did I mis-read ya that you would with our heavy
Sportsmans as well, but just hadn't yet?

Regards,

Well it depends on what conditions you need higher or lower pressure for, Such as riding on dirt roads , high speed trails and traveling fast, I wouldnt run higher speeds with less than 5-10 psi in the tires , if Im doing some tight tech stuff then I want less than 5 psi, Now on the hawkeye that had the 25 inch tires on it i had to air them to 10 psi to get less resistance and Better handling and more speed.

Our new 500 4 wheeler I wont air em up unless I need to from extra weight being loaded onto it.
