Default Steering problem sportsman 500 2001

Hello
Sometimes my steering pulls hard to the right in forward, if I put it in reverse the steering is fine. This happened while in 2 wd, but follows if I engage 4wd.Eventualy after switching between fwd and reverse it frees up.This happened while I was making a tight turn around at a dead end. (2001 500 sportsman)

The hub is locking up as if it is still in four wheel drive. Seems to be a common problem. The owners manual suggest backing up to free the hub or take to a dealer if the problem persist. Mine does this same thing pretty often and I just live with it. You can try changing the hub fluid. If that doesn't work then try the spring, garter.

I only have a problem after backing up a hill in 4x4. Back up 10 feet(?) in 4x2 while jerking handlebars back and forth to shake hub loose. It always worked for me.

Thanks for the info, have you ever had the problem happen while riding ?
I was afriad it might engage while riding and send me into a tree ;(
Or dose it only happen after backing up ?

It won't lock in by itself. I think it happens in reverse only. It has to be in 4x4 for it to happen, and mine has only done it in reverse while using the override to get 4-wheel-drive. Now that I think about it, it has happened when spinning all 4 wheels backing out of mud. That and backing up hill in 4x4. That happened at a dead end with hillls on both sides. I had to go back and forth on both hills a couple of times just to turn around. The hubs didn't lock very often but it was always backing up in 4x4 with the override button held in.
