Default 2004 Trail Boss 330 carb question

Hello, New to the forum here,,avid reader-1st time poster. I just bought a used 04 Trail Boss. Real nice shape but hadn't been driven in a while-old gas left in tank. I drained the tank and bowl, put in fresh gas. Started right up with some throttle coaxing to keep running til warm. I noticed that there is a stumble or hesitation when hitting throttle which seems to occur at lower end of range and occurs whether I hit or slowly "roll" throttle. This seems to lessen when warm however. (Note: I havent had a chance to ride on trails yet, only start in garage and short trip down street and back.
I took off carb (PIA), cleaned and reinstalled but really no change so I guess I have to adjust the pilot screw and/or change needle clip position. Does that sound right??? .I'll be able to take out and finally ride this weekend and attempt adjustments. Its just such a pain to remove carb and there is really no access to the pilot screw on this carb to adjust while running. I did drill out the plug. Was out 3 turns. I put it back same way. Has anybody had experience with this carb and figured out a tool that will give access to adjust while it's running. As for the needle, I'm gonna try and just loosen the clamps and turn the carb to get access to the diaphram area.
I also notice that when i adjust the idle screw up to increase rpm's(higher than specs but was just mess'n w/it) I noticed gas leaked steady from bowl overflow tube-it stopped when idle screw put back at proper rpm. Any idea what causes this. Thanks in advance and sorry so long winded .............

Default 2004 Trail Boss 330 carb question

Welcome to the forums dgr146.

First, the Trail Boss is well known for being cold natured. So just be prepared for a little extra warm up time.

And it is a major pain to get to the carb.

Sounds like you're looking in the right direction. Needle seating, and if you can, blow some compressed air through the pilot. Thinking I'm only 2 1/2 out on the air mix screw, but mine is a 325 and it's piped. Getting that jetted right was a joy.

If it's pouring out gas, I'd take a look at the float and valve too.

Default 2004 Trail Boss 330 carb question

Scootergptx,
Thanks for the quick response. I didnt remove the float when disassembled,,tried but couldnt get the pin out for fear of breaking the support tab. Thought it was wierd that it only leaked when I adjusted idle up, but stopped when turned back down,,hmmmmm. I saw that Motion Pro has a 90degree carb adj tool, looks cool and might work well, but at $90, seems a bit steep. Would it be acceptable to shut down machine, adj screw then fire back up to adj that pilot screw? Too bad they dont make an aftermarket screw--extra long w/ finger knurls like on idle screw.
