it will be real serious if you ride it that way... i just had the same problem this last weekend with mine except my boot didn't tear but the metal band broke... i pulled the axle and cleaned out all the old grease (you want to rub it between your fingers to see feel for grit and dirt) and re-packed it (4 oz)... i just got the new boot band put on last night but didn't have time to put everything back together..
it's not hard to get the axle out just remove the axle nut w/ cotter pin, pull the hub off the axle then the upper arm of the rear suspension, the rear bearing carrier will "flip" down and out comes the outboard end of the axle then yank it out of the trans...

i dont have a torque wrench or anything like that, just normal ratchets and tools.
i havent done any work like that on my atv, just maintenance and fixing parts like the bumper, but im really good at working on stuff like this.

then i guess you should go look at the rear end and see if it is something you can do your self... there are 2 bolts that hold the upper arm on 15mm the axle nut i cant remember.. its metric but i think i had to use a 1.0625" socket because i dont have anything this big.. getting the axle out can be a pain in the rear.

oh, so you take the arm off. i thought you would take the wheel off and work from there, but i guess the arm would be alot easier. its at my other house right now, so cant look at it till tomorrow.
but ill go to my polaris dealer today and see if he has it and if not ill order it and get some info from him. thanks!

you take the wheel off, the hub, then take the upper arm off then you can take the axle out and fix the boot. not sure what the torque specs are right off hand.
