Default 2007 Sportsman 500 EFI, Won't Idle.....

Hello All,

I picked up a left over 2007 500 Sportsman EFI, HO.

I have had it out 3 or 4 times, but my last time, I ran into some problems.

Half way through the trip, I noticed that my gas was running low, so i decided not to go too far out into the woods.

Just some time after that, the quad quit running, and would not idle. I had to put it in neutral, hold the throttle half way open, get it started, and then throw it into gear to get moving.

Though it would just be the gas, so when I got back, I filled it up, but the problem continues to exitst.

Full tank of gas, but the bike won't idle. I can get it started, though sometimes it can take more cranks, or the use of the throttle, but once I get moving, it seems to run ok.

Any and all advice is appreciated. Could I have a clogged vent somewhere? Did the running low on gas cause any problems?

It is probably your idle adjustment. Check your manual it should walk you through it. The adjustment is in a rubber boot on the right handle bar.
Hope this helps. Same thing happened to me with about 6 hours on the new machine.

There's an electrical contact in the throttle mechanism on the handlebar. If this is misadjusted it will kill the bike when the throttle is let off completely. It is a kill switch of sorts in case your throttle cable sticks. Once you pull the cover off the throttle you will see what I mean. Once adjusted per the manual it will probably fire right up.

There could be some other problem but my uncle had 2 sportsmans do this exact thing. One was on his 07 SP500 with 40 miles on it and the other was a 2000 SP500

That video has a better explanation.

There is a throttle adjustment screw in line on the throttle cable about 3-4" down from the ETC. Pull the rubber boot back, start the machine and adjust the cable tension with the adjustment screw and lock nut. I have to adjust mine so often that I don't even put the boot back on anymore.

The adjustment in the throttle cable IS NOT for the idle. The throttle cable needs to have 1/16" - 1/8" of slack for the ETC to work properly. If it's too tight or too loose that can cause the ATV to not run right. First make sure the throttle cable is adjusted properly. There should be an idle speed set screw you can adjust on the throtle body. If it still has a problem the dealer needs to "re-boot" the computer on it. They call it re-flashing the ECU. On carb models the idle speed adjustment is on the carb.

It sounds like you just need to adjust your cable for your idle to work. You adjust it by the cable boot on the handle bars. It's a normal thing to do on a new quad.

THIS IS NOT THE IDLE SPEED ADJUSTER, that for adjusting cable slack AFTER adjusting idle speed. ALSO on EFI's idle speed is set at the factory, if it is altered in any way the THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR has to be reinitialized by a pol;aris dealer. YOU SHOULD READ YOUR MANUAL A LITTLE CLOSER.

I don't need your caps to tell me anything. I'm sayin, not askin that I have fix my idle and 2 others by usin the cable adjuster. If you don't want to do it that way, then don't. I try the easier / simple things first. Then go on from there.

i'm not trying to tell you what to do, just trying to tell you the correct way it is supposed to be done. I'm not just a poser. this is what I work on all day. I have since 1991. When I give advice, I'm not just throwing bullshit out there, it is the correct info.

Afternoon SCRAMBLER500XXX
I have found that on a new quad the cable will stretch, And in adjusting it, it can fix that part. It is important that when it is adjusted, that it is adjusted to the right rpm. I like around 1150. It keeps the shifting easy and the quad don't want to Crawl.
