2 cycle troubles

I have a polaris sportsman 90 04 auto oil mix 2 stroke. last week end it seized up. Tore down and found piston stuck in the jug. I have all new parts on order to repair but the question is why did it seize up. how do you check if the auto mix is working? the jug and piston were totally dry. Shouldn't there be some lubrication going on?? any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
It was running fine no noise at time of failure. Will mix first tank of gas.Is there a way to check crank blow by?? did find lots of straw in the intake to generator housing. It was in a barn posible overheating??

Pump could still be working,JUST that piston may have been worn out,too much clearance. Was engine noisy or sound like marbles in a tin can before seizure. MOST people blame seizures on oil pump and dont realize that 2-strokes require top end service about 3 times quicker than 4-strokes. Also crank seal leakage, lean carb jetting can contribute to seizures. AFTER rebuild, premix first tank of fuel, check small injector line going into carb,if small amount of oil present pump should be ok! Good luck
