Default 2000 trail blazer hard starting cold

Hello,

I have a 2000 polaris 250 trail blazer that is hard as heck to start when it is cold. I suspected carburator problems, so I rebuilt the carb. I suspected compression; tested at 115 PSI engine cold. it has a good spark and fuel flow is fine. To get it started, I choke it and have to give it wide open throttle and crank for 10 or 15 seconds. When it does start, it is loaded up and needs to clear out for another 10 seconds or so before it runs good. After that, it cranks and fires in seconds and runs great. It is strictly when it is cold that it is hard to start.

This bike I had sold to my boss last year and it always started great when I owned it. He told me that an odd occurance was that it would pull start real easy until he broke the pull starter. it would crank and crank with not even a pop, but pull start fine. I don't know if this is accurate however. Anyway, any ideas on what the problem may be and how I can test it?

thanks,

Brendan

when you rebuild the carb did you blow out all of the little passages with low pressure air? it really sounds as tho the pilot jet screw isnt set right. 2.5 turn from bottomed out is what its supposed to be i believe

pilot was in good shape; 2 turns out. I used the old one, as it looked larger than the new one. this bike does have some modifications

another thing is if you have ot give WOT to start, it sounds like the choke plunger maybe stuck or misadjusted. sure you can move the lever but the plunger wont move in the carb. there are 2 cables that run to the carb. one is in the very top which has the plunger the other is off to the side and has about a 1/2" nut that holds it in. thats the choke plunger. check it out and check for proper adjustment and make sure theres not any trash blocking any of the ports in there.
