Default Just purchased 1999 polaris sport 400 (have a few questions)

I bought my wife and I 2 atvs this weekend one being a 1999 polaris 400 sport. I feel i got a good deal on it but had a few questions before about it, hopefully you guys could help me out a little. we use to have a polaris automatic a few years back and if i remember correctly it did the same thing, but it seems to take a second or two to get going after i throttle it. also It smokes when you first crank it up and stays smoking but after i get going the smoke stops for the most part. my dad thinks because it is a 2 stroke it will probably do that. also when it goes to idle, the engine will die when you let off the throttle. the guy i purchased it from said something about the choke switch was broke, does that sound about right? being my first atv im sure i will have a ton of questions in the future. please any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks Danny

I had the same model. First off make sure your air filter is clean. Second, there is an idle adjustment right on the carb that may be adjusted. The idle can only be set so high though or the unit will want to grind going into gear beings that it is a syntrifical clutch. Also pretty normal for a 2 stroke to smoke on start up. The choke should only be on long enough to start then you want to shut it off, other words you might start fowling plugs.

i don't think thats your problem I would try rebuilding the carb first, the smoke is probably not an issue

Smoke is no worry.Do check the choke switch, and never rev it at idle you will blow up your clutch I know from experience 500$ repair. When you start it up does it die a little and then in a the course of a minute come out to a healthy idle?
