However, I will miss the storage under the front rack. Can't put a lot of stuff in mine, but it is nice to store some of the odds and ends in there.</end quote></div>
I agree...as a stock piece that comes with the 800 the storage area is a bonus. However...I think Polaris went with the idea of adding accessories. One accessory is the front storage box for the XP. Which of course adds to the overall cost of the machine. Good...and bad...I suppose.

It actually is better there from an engineering standpoint,as far as the winch being closer to the center of the frame. Sucks for it to be under water/mud,but remember they only intend for you to be upto the floorboards
Being submerged aside it's location will make the winch alot more effective in most situations by not pulling the front down like the old location did.

Oh it will lift the front end without even trying I'm sure. My daughter loves the acceleration so I used to mash on the 800 real quick with her riding, nothing high speed of course, just quick low speed bursts of acceleration in an open field behind our house. I could got WOT on the 800 and still feel it was safe. I did that with her on the 850,but not WOT,maybe 1/2-3/4 and she loved it, said it gave her butterflies and 'said "the old one didn't do that!" lol. And that was in high. I can't imagine nailing it in low. I haven't felt the need to go WOT at real low speeds just yet,1/2-3/4 has been plenty lol.
rancher55- Thanks, I think it looks alot better too. Turned out pretty good.
I'm going to find some stout metal screen to form a rad protector out of, and put it behind the plastic stock grill. I plan to make it where it will protect the rad from the sides as well.</end quote></div>
I got that plastic grill back from the dealer yesterday so now I can trim it to fit around my winch. Let us know when you get the rad. protector in! Pics too!

Cool. I think it adds a more finished touch. I'm suprised Polaris didn't make one like they do for the regular models. Will do on the screen, gonna try to do it this weekend.
On a side note have you guys seen the 850 on 31's on HL. Not my cup of tea, but I asked him how well it turned the 31's with stock clutching. He said "like there aren't even there". He hasn't ran it on anything but level ground, but said he didn't think clutch or gearing would needed. I think that is pretty impressive.

My curiosity about mileage is because we do as mentioned and haul trailers in on some real bad ATV trails on our hunting trips. We have enough gear, food and fuel to last us two and a half weeks while on our trip. We are tenting also so we end up with all the extra gear along with kitchen gear etc. We use the ATV's while we are in there for the two and a half weeks also. With my 600 Grizzly I would take in three 5 gallon jugs of fuel so with an 850 I will probably have to haul in four. It should have enough power to haul the extra fiver

Rode a few hours today, still averaging about 2-2.5 hours per gallon crawling slow trails mostly. I firmly satnd behind this machine getting noticabley better mileage than the 800. And WITHOUT A DOUBT it is better and smoother in the rough stuff, ie crawling over downed trees in this case. A combo of the ground clearance and the suspension makes it seem ALOT less like work. I climbled over trees in 2WD that I normally needed 4WD to get over with the 800, and was able to climb over in a slow and controlled manner to boot. In 4WD it was child's play. Instead of pulling the front up and sharply blipping the throttle to lift the front end until the the rear bit the tree I was able to just drive over them at a constant slow speed. I took my 10 year niece for a ride, she has ridden the 800 many times with me. I like getting a review from a child because they aren't biased and a very sensitive to comfort. She loved it and without prodding made many comments comparing it to the 800, all were prefaced with "I like this one better because".

I've heard some mention that the new XP isn't as good as the old model in slow technical terrain. It is supposedly geared too high or something. Makes it harder to control the power and crawl and climb smoothly.
Any comments?

As Highoctane just mentioned above, he hit the nail right on the head!!! There is no doubt or argument on this topic. The XP is phenomenal in technical terrain!!!! The control and smoothness is really amazing, considering all the power that this thing has.
