ATV insurance

Are you guys that are quoting Progressive at $75 or so a year per ATV quoting FULL coverage? I use them for auto insurance and there rates are good,I had USAA and switched to Progressive...they want like $350 a year for FULL coverage with a mid-line liability(30/60/25), yeah liability is like $74,but that doesn't cover theft. If you aren't sure you might want to look closer. The Polaris(Markel) insurance is a little over $200 a year for full coverage a mid way liability coverage(25/50/25).

HIGHOCTANE,
Here's my Progressive coverage...

Property Damage Liability - 25,000 each accident
Uninsured Motorist - 50,000/100,000
Underinsred Motorist - 50,000/100,000
Pedestrian First Party - 5,000
Comp 250 deductible
Collision 250 deductible
Accessory coverage 3,000
My premium is $81 a year.
I don't need the Medical for me, as my insurance at work covers that.

Damn, wonder why my quote was so high, lol. Maybe because it is an 850? Another posibility is, i live in a lower crime area but the ATV/Motorcycle theft rate is HIGH. It's a rural military town and there are ALOT of ATVs and Motorcycles and theft rings target the area. The quote was almost as much as I pay for full coverage on my truck.

Why not go to Progressive and get a quote. Doesn't cost a penny. If you use an independent insurance agent that has Progressive, he can finish the deal.
Sorry, I see that you already got a quote from Progressive. Not sure why it was so high?

I went through Auto Owner's as I have both my home and autos with them. My 800 was "a premium" machine and cost me almost 125/year, but that carries the higher liability (300,000), Full replacement, Gap (value vs. loan) and theft coverage that I have on my vehicles.
My opinion is you should have the coverage. You can get insurance from any company out there, but after a 5 year legal battle after my wife's accident and having to file against our insurance co twice, you should get in with a good company. And that goes for you home and autos too. Our attorney said Progressive and AllState where the worst for standing behind their insured. We switched to Auto Owners on his recommendation and could not be happier.

Insurance is a funny thing...I consider it one of those necessary evils. "People love it when they need it; and hate paying for it when they don't".
I don't claim to know all of the ins and outs with insurance because it varies so much State by State. However, since I work for State Farm I figured I would chime in here.
Bottom line, insurance for your ATV/UTV, in MOST cases is a very good idea. First, I can tell you, be very weary of someone in your insurance office telling you your ATV is insured under your homeowner's policy. It CAN be, but there is a very strict guideline (and I believe this is true for all 50 states). You need to specifically speak to your agent and get it straight from his/her mouth. Even then, the company's insurance adjuster could over rule anything the agent told you and tell you your claim is not covered.
Motorized vehicles of any kind are not covered under a homeowner's policy UNLESS they are for the sole maintenance/care of that property, or to assist a disabled person, ie: riding lawnmower, wheelchair, tractor etc. If you intend to fly under the radar and try to have your ATV covered, be careful! YES, if you have a snowplow you may very well be able to have it covered under a loss, but that depends on the type of loss (more on that later). But, let's say you a snow plow or whatever and you also happen to have an OHV sticker on the ATV. That sticker is a big time red flag to an insurance company/adjuster when it comes claim time. You can't have it both ways. If the ATV never leaves the property it probably would be covered (but you better have that snow plow or be able to prove other methods it is used for your property. Here is another example. Let's say you take your ATV off the property just one time....of course it happens to be that one time that it's stolen. If you expect your going to file a claim under your homeowner's policy, you are going to have to talk to the police and obtain a police report. Uummmm....that would suck's! The insurance company assumes that it is still on your property. So, if you plan on falsifying a police report, well I will leave that one up to you. I think you get my point.
Now, let's say you fly under the radar and decided you don't need insurance and want it covered under your homeowner's policy. Any loss that ATV would incur is going to be subject that the homeowner's policy deductible, ie: $250, $500, $1,000 or whatever. Since the ATV would be considered personal property, would the insurance company give you guaranteed replacement cost coverage on the ATV? Or, are they going to just pay ACV, which takes depreciation off of the rig? See, it all boils down to what your homeowner's policy language states on personal property. I am just saying it could get ugly!
I am definitely not telling you to run out and get insurance or not get insurance. My point is, I would urge everyone to just do their homework. Find out what is covered and what isn't. Can you afford it, can you not afford it, do you even really care??? We spend a terrific amount of money for our ATVs and at least I like to know it my ATV is going to be replaced, or if it I would be compensated if something would happen whether it be theft, vandalism, fire or just running it into that @#%!! tree.
....Damn tree never should have been there anyway!!!!

Good point... the Comprehensive is what covers theft and vandalism.
EDIT: For sure, one should call their insurance company or agent and make sure what is covered (including theft), and what is not covered, and for how much.
Also, don't assume that the quad is insured under your homeowners policy. Some policies "can" cover additional personal property, but you have to add it on to the policy and stipulate the value. Some homeowners polices won't, and don't cover recreational vehicles.
Lastly, if you have a trailer, you need to add coverage for it if you want it covered.

My coverage with Progressive is the same as DCT's - premium is $75/yr in Maine - and yes that includes theft coverage.
