Default New Guy!!!

I just wanted to say hello to everyone!! I am new to this forum and to the atv world. So I will be asking alot of stuff.
I got my six year old son a small 4 wheeler for his birthday, and he started wanting me to get one. So with money being so hard to come by this day and time, I did alot of shopping and looking around, and found me a used one at a good price. I got a 98 Sportsman 500 4x4, so with that being said, please fill free to tell me everything you know about this atv. One last thing before I go, a friend of mine thinks i got a 96 Sportsman, but the guy that sold it to me says it's a 98. Is there a way to know?
I want to thank you now for any info you can give, because I am really lost on all this, but I can't wait to learn!!!!!

Welcome to the forum Sport. Check your VIN and look at this. http://www.atvstyle.com/index.php/atv-vin-number The 10th digit is the year. T for '96, W for '98.

welcome. how many miles on it? i think it was the late 0's models that had a soft cam and wore off the lobes causing it not to run right but i wouldnt worry too much unless it acts up. if you dont know when the last sevice was doen it wouldnt hurt to do a complete sevice to it. imo.

Thanks for the info guys!! I will take a look at my vin and see what I got. Sorry I did'nt say how many miles was on the atv. It had 714 when I got it. The guy that I got got it from just used it for hunting, and he changed jobs, and did'nt have time to hunt any more.
