There should be NO gap on between the throttle body arm and the idle set screw. The gap isn't on the throttle body it is in the ETC(the black box the thumb throttle sticks out of). Take the cover off and you will see a set of contacts, that is where you set the gap. You do not want the contacts to touch, that activates the ETC. That is why you set the gap. The cable too tight will NOT activate ETC,only too loose. When you "flick" the throttle you are just verifying the cable is moving freely and that the adjustment doesn't change. You do not flick it while adjusting. Adjust the gap flick it a couple of times while watching to make sure the contacts do not touch and re-check the gap. The downside of too tight is the idle is artifically rasied by the cable holding the throttle plate open and that the ETC may not work properly in the event of a stuck throttle plate. Both the 1/16-1/8 freeplay and the gap procedure are acceptable methods IMO. In 08 they used the freeplay in 09 with the XPs they have the gap method in the manual. The gap method is more accrurate as you can actually see if the contacts make a connection when you quicky release the throttle but both work if you understand the system.

Ok,just make sure the gap is not closing up completey when you release the throttle.

I hope that resolves your issues.

The contacts are supposed to close when you let off the throttle. The manual says "With the handles bars straight ahead, place very light pressure on the throttle lever. A gap of 2-3mm should be visible between the throttle arm stop pin and the throttle arm." So if that is there I guess because of the spring involved when you let the throttle go quickly it appears to go back against the throttle stop but if you let it go slowly you can see the gap. I guess I'll find out the weekend of the 6th.
Take care
Dave
