Hi I just purchased a 98 xplorer 300 for light farm duty. The starter was bad so I installed a new one with a new gearset. For some reason the starter only turns the motor over once before it kicks out. If I continue to hold the starter button it just spins freely and doesnt spin the motor. The battery seems fine. What is usually the problem when this happens? Thanks

 

you should rule out the battery first. if there isnt enough power in the battery, it will spin the starter over but not fast enough to kick the bendix out.
if after you let it sit for a few minutes then try to start it again and it turns the motor over again i would say that your battery is either bad or needs to be topped off and charged
