Default 1996 300 Explorer

About a month ago I bought a 1996 300 explorer that seems to be in pretty good shape along with a 60" snow blade.

Are these older 2 cycle ATV'S pretty dependable? We have just had a couple of minor problems with it. All at once we had the starter stop working and all it would do is click. After about a week of pull starting the darn thing now the Stater works like it was never broken. Could it have been wet it? We had been driving it a lot during the time the starter didn't work I used the pull starter to start it. We were driving though some pretty rough chiseled farm ground using it to flag off some acre's so don't know if all of that bouncing helped it to start working or not.

The foot brake seems to work when it wants too and also had the front brake stop working for about 1 hour one day now the front brake is working great of course the foot brake still wortks only one it wants too.

I got to use it in a little snow the other day and what a blast that was I can't wait for a bunch more snow!! So much easier than the big old snowblower!

How fast are these old 2 cycles supposed to go I had it going almost 50 mph up hill at least that is what my GPS said and I was amazed that the little thing would go that fast. i figured maybe about 30mph would have been cool but 50 mph is ok I guess not complaining.

Since I bought the ATV I have been lurking around this forum and I have picked up a lot of great information about ATV'S, but one other question I have to ask is this. Are these ATV'S a real pain in the but to maintain, is it something that a person should be able to get a handle on the maintaince and keep it running with out dumping a ton of money at a Polaris dealer?

I am sure over time I will have lots of questions to ask.

The bushes in your starter were sticking, they can work lose and work again (for awhile) but you should take the starter apart and clean and lube the brushes throughly.

A stroke just have more power per cc. I have a 2000 DritWheels shootout with 3 250 4x4 ATVs , a 250 AC 4 stroke ,a 250 Suzuki 4 stroke and a Polaris 250 2 stroke.

When they did a drag race test the 2 stroke was 10! ATV lengths ahead of the 4 strokes.

In motocross racing it takes a 450 4 stroke to race in a 250 2 stroke class race.

Yamaha makes a little inexpensive 195cc 2 stroke Blaster, that will give a 350 -400 ATVs a run for its money
